Shout Your Abortion Store

In January 2023, Shout Your Abortion hired me to design & run their new mini-storefront in Seattle, WA. We had three weeks to design, implement, and open this space.
Client
Shout Your Abortion is a non-profit working to normalize abortion and elevate safe paths to access, regardless of legality.
Bringing attention to something that has historically been kept in the shadows is fundamental to SYA’s mission and values, so I knew I wanted this space to be jaw dropping from head to toe.
Using the Shout Your Abortion book as my guide, I created mock-ups illustrating the loud and proud vision for this space. Drawing inspiration from the color and eclectic style of the book, I focused on the main feeling we wanted to communicate: relentless joy and freedom.
I plastered the back wall floor-to-ceiling with free materials found on SYA’s website. When people compliment the art and imagery, I have the opportunity to tell them they can print their own at home!
I painted the remaining walls with bright-colored designs and language found in SYA merch & posters, hanging both gifted pro-abortion art and vintage photos in frames found at Value Village.
You know people who pick things up on the side of the road? Yeah, I’m one of them, and this space is furnished almost completely by hand-me-downs and found objects made new with a little bit of love. My dad made our free material shelf, which we keep stocked with free propaganda for folks to pick-up and distribute.
We added handmade curtains, an “Abortion Pills” pillow and, of course, a giant pill box to round out the space.
The Shout Shop is an ongoing project, and I host events there every Sunday ranging from free material pick-up hours and abortion aftercare kit packing to button making and pro-abortion heat press parties.
