Rain City Rock Camp

Youth Zine Workshop

Ask

Rain City Rock Camp hired me as a workshop instructor for their Summer Camp Program in 2023. We tailored my zine workshop for age groups 7 to 12 and 13 to 17 years old, focusing on the history of zine’s and their connection to social justice movements, marginalized communities and music.

Client

Rain City Rock Camp combines music education, gender-responsive programming, and a commitment to positive social change through their community events and camps.

In four hour and a half long workshops, we briefly covered the history of zines and how they can be used to communicate ideas, messages, and feelings.

Drawing connections to how zines have been used by bands, music communities, and marginalized artists, campers had the opportunity to explore their creativity through making their own music-focused zines.

We provided all materials, including thrifted magazines and books, collage kits with relevant musicians and motifs, risograph misprints, and all the supplies needed to put them together: scissors, glue, tape and duh! Lisa Frank stickers!

Each kid took home a copy of β€œThis is a Zine,” my self-published zine that details the history and basic structure and process of creating a zine to continue their exploration at home. Zine, zine, zine!
